Class: Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Course Objective:

The primary objective of this course is to teach students how to create a website using standards-compliant code with XHTML. Students will also learn how to apply styles, format text and layouts on their websites and blogs using CSS.

The secondary objective is to introduce students to the BSD/Linux operating systems, Apache HTTP Server, Command Line (Konsole/PuTTY), SSH, and The Gimp. Students will also learn how to use a programming language, Python.

Text and Materials:

The Instructor will provide students with one or two online Tutorials each week.

Students are required to bring a USB to class.

Class Participation and Attendance:

Class participation provides the opportunity to practice dialog skills, the ability to speak and listen. Contributions relevant to the current topic in class from the Tutorials will greatly influence your class participation grade. Talking to your classmates, using your mobile phones, sleeping, eating, etc., during clas will not. If you fail to participate during the lecture or group activities, you WILL NOT receive full Class Participation points.

Examinations:

There will be one Midterm and one Final Exam. Exams will cover all the online Tutorials provided to the students.

Class Project:

Students will create a 5 page website using standard-compliant (X)HTML and CSS. More details of the Class Project will be given later.

Grades:

The Final Grade will reflect the midterm, final exam, class project, and participation.

Grades will be calculated as follows:

Class Project: 20%
Homework (including bringing USB to class): 5%
Participation: 15%
Midterm Exam: 30%
Final Exam: 30%

Class Rules

Starting the 3rd Quarter, the student's participation mark has increased to 15 percent as a means to remedy students breaking the Linux Lab Rules. Students will lose 10 percent for each infraction from their Final Participation grade for the following:

1. Playing Games During Class (Students will visit the School Principal for this infraction as well)
2. Surfing the Internet During Class
3. Chatting Online During Class
4. Coming Late to Class
5. Talking in Class
6. Being Disruptive During Class

Repeated infractures will force the Teacher to send the student to the School Principal for disciplinary action...
